What Makes This Preschool Cooperative?
This preschool is cooperative for a very good reason. The preschool believes that the best way to educate the children is to have a cooperative effort between the teachers and the parents. The school encourages the active participation of every parent.
Realizing that everyone has different demands on his/her time, we try to have several options for parents’ contributions to the school:
Help in the classroom. A parent, grandparent, or special family friend may be scheduled to help in the classroom on a rotating basis.
Be a member of our Preschool Board. The Board meets several times during the year and makes decisions about tuition, staffing, budgets, etc.
Help periodically throughout the school year. Opportunities include providing goodies for a school celebration, volunteering to help with a semi-annual classroom cleaning, and sharing a talent or hobby with the class.
Help with Fund Raising. Each family is asked to help with fund raising every year. Depending on the need, funds raised will go toward general budget, a particular item for the classroom, or a special activity or event for the children and families of the Cooperative Preschool. Parents may be asked to sell merchandise, request donations for an event, prepare for a fund-raising event, or donate clothes and toys for a consignment sale. Our largest fundraiser is the Kid's Market, which occurs every spring.
Help fill a school need. Parents have volunteered time to create school websites, organize and collect Labels for Education, and organize and collect used printer cartridges, cell phones, etc. for a special fund-raising program.
This collaboration helps the students, their families, and the teachers to develop strong relationships. This partnership is important to teach young learners and prepare them for grade school and future social experiences.
